This article details California's most recent endeavor, a law that allows illegal immigrants to obtain licenses. Those benefiting from the passing, namely the immigrant who will now be able to drive legally, speak of all the opportunities a license will allow them. With all the mobility in America today, driving is a necessity. Furthermore, by allowing everybody to get licenses, the public as a whole will be more educated on driving, hopefully creating safer roads and more cautious driver. Many supporters of this law profess their hopes that California will only be the beginning, and the other states will follow by example and the whole county will have the ability to be licensed. While this is a noble ambition, at this point it seems to be nothing more than a pipe dream. For all the people in support of this law, there are many directly opposed to it, the most obvious reason being, they are not citizens. Both sides have valid arguments, and at the moment opinions are so varied the only way to really know the most beneficial action to take is to see how the outcome in California.
While I see the validity of both sides, I think the need for more safety on the roads outweighs the need to have only 'American' drivers. I understand the concern, or bitterness, in the fact that this would be allowing non citizens to obtain American documentation, but if immigrants intend to be over here, driving, they may as well be educated. Additionally, this would remove certain hinderances put in the way of these people, who firmly believe driving is a basic right, not a privilege. The fact of the matter is, the roads are rife with undocumented drivers and the education and legalization of these drivers should be a priority.

While I do agree with you, that safety is important on the roads, I don't think we should be making it so easy for them to just come and stay. Why would we even have an immigration system at all if they can come illegally, get a driver's license, and stay?
ReplyDeleteI completely agree, however, the increased presence of illegal immigrants is a blatant harbinger that the amount of undocumented people in the country isn't slowing down any time soon. If they are going to be here anyways isn't it better that they are educated on basic driving procedures? For the benefit off all people, not just citizens.
