Lily Philips- Chicago Has a New Mayor

Lori Lightfoot is Chicago’s 56th mayor and was sworn in on Monday, May 20. Her inauguration speech will go down in history, and she focused on the city’s need for reform. She won all 50 wards and plans to first take care of zoning and power by aldermen. She also addressed her interest in bettering gun control and improving the quality of public schools. After electing Ms. Lightfoot, the city of Chicago became the biggest to elect an African American woman as mayor. She is also the first mayor from Chicago to be openly gay. Lori Lightfoot could be the woman who will initiate change not only in her city but in the country as well.
