Ryan Mecca | Transgender woman who was attacked in April found dead on Dallas street

*I am noticing that several people already posted on this topic within hours/minutes of mine so I'm sorry*

Muhlaysia Booker, a transgender woman living in Dallas, was attacked back in April by a group of men after a minor traffic incident. The men, using homophobic slurs, are believed to have been attacking her as a hate crime. After the fact, the mayor spoke out in disappointment towards the way we have treated the LGBTQ+ community. This past Saturday Booker was killed in a shooting, in which police are still attempting to uncover whether or not it is related to the past incident.
This article, written by Sheena Jones, Susannah Cullinane, and Eric Levenson, serves as a call to action to those living in Dallas. They include a quote in the article from Mayor Rawlings which stated that "we will not stand for this kind of behavior," leading me to believe that they want political action to be taken towards putting an end to attacks on members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Efforts towards the Gay Rights Movement (now in addition to other LGBTQ+ groups) began in the 60s with the rise of the Sexual Revolution. As more people began to rebel against the societal norms, members of the LGBTQ+ community felt the need to take a stand for their rights. The fact that these people are facing oppression today displays the continuing fight for their rights since this era.
