the worlds second largest emperor penguin colony has disappeared this past week, leaving many to suspect it is a result of climate change. researchers from the british antarctic survey revealed that thousands of emperor penguin chicks drowned when a large iceberg was destroyed by storms in 2016. since this large drop in their population, emperor penguins at the halley bay colony have failed to raise chicks for the last three years, leaving the majority of the colony vanished. emperor penguins need stable sea ice to raise their chicks, from when they are first born to when they are able to walk and swim. scientists say this mass decrease in population is in part due to winter storms and also climate change, which has caused an increase in habitat destruction in the arctic.
