Robert F. Smith Pays Graduating Class' Student Debt- Gabriel Allen

Robert F. Smith's blockbuster donation to college grads could start a new trend of giving

Billionaire tech investor Robert F. Smith said he will pay off the student debt for all the graduates in Morehouse College's class of 2019. He announced this on Sunday while he was delivering the commencement address at the all-male, historically black college that is in Atlanta, Georgia. The students were all shocked and relieved that they would no longer have the thousands of dollars in debt looming over them. The total amount of student debt that the gift is estimated to be is about $40 million.

This is something that is very admirable and I can only imagine how grateful these students must be. This can serve to bring people's attention to the increasing rates of student debt that our country's youth is continuously having to face. After finishing our Algebra project for the six weeks where we had to learn about college and the student loans that we will most likely have to pay, student debt and loans is a scary reality that I am very wary of now, so I can have a new found appreciation for this gesture. I hope this serves to encourage many people to try and find a solution to the predatory system that is student loans and work to make it something that aids students rather than something that many have to fear.
