H3H3- Sophie Knox

Summary: Over this past week, H3H3 has been in some controversy over a video they recently posted about instagram vs reality where they compare Instagram photos to actual real photos of the same person.  H3H3 is a commentary YouTube Channel with Ethan and his wife, Hila. He does make harsh comments on their appearance, but also emphasizes it’s ok to look that way, and that these influencers shouldn’t post these fake photographs. One of the girls in this named Tisha went to Twitter and YouTube to complain about his video. She even went as far as to tell Hila that is was sick of her to stand by Ethan and that she should divorce him. On her you tube video she claims that Ethan is harming young girls in that video.

Analysis: Personally, I have a bias towards this story. I’m a big fan of H3H3 and I do take their side on this. One of the constant trends I see on social media are makeup gurus completely covering their face in make up. I believe make up should be used to help features of the face, not completely create new ones. I typically don’t go looking for this type of content, but when I do see it, sometimes it does make me self conscious. Social media affects all of our daily lives and we need to understand that the life some influencers post isn’t actually true. What I liked about Ethan’s video is that he is being very body positive and saying it’s ok to not look like a Barbie doll. Some people say that he was bullying people because of their looks, but he was just pointing out these obvious differences in the photos jokingly in a harsh manner. What Trisha said about Ethan’s wife and how she should divorce him was totally wrong. Yes, you are allowed to be offended, but try to see where H3H3 is coming from. He’s not harming young girls at all, Ethan’s whole video was meant to make people more confident about their bodies. This article was mainly just a drama piece going back and forth what Ethan and Trish said on Twitter. I can relate this to the miss America protests against the “ideal” vision of what a woman should look like.
