Mexican officials in the state of Veracruz have come out and apologized in an unprecedented move for the murder of 5 youths after they were turned over to drug cartels by several police officers of the state. The families of the victims are demanding justice for their deceased family, with the officers being arrested along with several others responsible for the deaths. This marks several years of a gruesome period in Mexican history, with over forty thousand people missing in the past two decades.
This story was reported on by Reuters, who is an extremely reliable and credible source of information. It is a total calamity that a country such as Mexico is having to apologize on behalf of police officers, whose job is to protect the public, for kidnapping several young adults and turning them into their death. This puts the members of the community into a situation where they don't feel safe reporting crimes relating to drug traffickers, because they're scared their own public servants will snitch on them for snitching.
I feel as if this story resembles the situation in much of the United States at the height of the Italian mafia in the country, with people being absolutely terrified of even public officials, such as corrupt cops who took from the mafia money in order to protect the sanctity of those organized criminal enterprises. Much like the drug cartels in Mexico, these crime syndicates would not flinch at causing collateral damage in the persecution of perceived targets and threat to these organizations.
