Sydney Ewing- UofM Blackface Discussion Panel

A panel at the University of Michigan was created and aimed at better understanding the practice of blackface. The panel will discuss blackface as a political tool, “why it still matters, why it was a thing and why it’s all over the news now.” The panel also will examine uses of cultural appropriation. The panel came as a response to the discovery of a racist photo of Virginia governor Ralph Northam in his yearbook. The event description is: “This high stakes culture war is playing out across our cultural landscape in ways that we need to better understand, and the practice of blackface as a political tool has become a particularly potent flash point.”

I think that it's great that these professors and students are getting together to discuss a very sensitive and controversial topic. This panel could well result in the education of many ignorant individuals as well as alleviate some of the negative feelings of people who are affected by events of blackface. Go U of M! It is a result of our constitution that allows us to criticize political leaders and discuss touchy subjects. This panel will also dive deep into what we've been studying right now in APUSH (like the emergence of blackface in minstrel shows) in order to put together a sort of historical sequence of events. I'm excited to see what conclusions the panel will come to.
