After a seven day strike, oakland teachers are finally returning to their jobs with $38 million under their wings including a four year 11% interest rate as well as a 3% bonus. However, many of their demands were not met like decreasing their class sizes and stopping the district’s plan of closing multiple schools to make charter schools. This had been the fourth major strike in Oakland in the past year, and after almost 18 months of negotiating with the district, teachers finally achieved their goal. Additionally, teachers want larger salaries because their salaries barely leave any money to be spent after they pay their expensive living bills. This leaves the district in a $56 million defecit in the next two years making them want to cut on spending instead of increase it.

Previously to reading the article I had known about other strikes in Colorado, for example, but did not know Oakland also was having a strike. It is incredible and so great that they are using their rights to get what the deserve. It is outrageous how they get payed just enough to cover living expenses! No one should live like that, especially people as hard working as teachers. You can relate this to the unions during the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era such as the Knights of Labor or the National Labor Union and how they would go on strike to get the outcomes they wanted.
