Isadora Lilly- Lori Loughlin College Bribery Scandal

This past week, actress Lori Loughlin and fashion designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli, were caught as being part of an elaborate college bribery scandal, consisting of cheating on the SAT and ACT as well as fabricating athletic credentials by paying coaches large sums in order to ultimately gain their children access into schools such as Yale, Georgetown and Stanford universities, the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, the University of Texas and Wake Forest University.

California mother and former Oakland school teacher who filed the lawsuit, Jennifer Kay Toy, claims that “legitimate applicants to colleges were denied access due to the illegal activities." Toy also expressed her anger over the scandal stating, “I'm outraged and hurt because I feel that my son, my only child, was denied access to a college not because he failed to work and study hard enough but because wealthy individuals felt that it was OK to lie, cheat, steal and bribe their children’s way into a good college.”

This reminds me of the many scandals which took place during the Roaring Twenties, in particular the Teapot Dome Scandal, where Secretary of the Interior, Albert B. Fall, profited from secret leasing to private oil companies of government oil reserves. This is another case in which a figure in a powerful position took advantage of their power and had consequences befall them, in particular damage to their reputation. After the scandal involving Loughlin it is said that she will no longer be appearing on season five of Fuller House and that Hallmark has also cut ties with the actress.

  1. This is pretty sad and irritating that people who have worked very hard to get into college, are being rejected only because someone has paid a great amount of money which is alot less work.

  2. I find it ironic that these people have to cheat their way into a system that was created to favor the rich and white.
