Summary: On Friday, March 15th, in a 5-4 decision, the Connecticut Supreme Court issued that the families of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary shooting victims can now sue Remington, the American gun-making company that provided Adam Lanza with the AR-15. The lawsuit mainly targeted Remington's "militaristic"-style marketing for the company's growth at the expense of civilians' safety. Although gun makers and dealers are shielded from allegations and lawsuits under legislation and legal liability in the case of a criminal offense involving the weapon, corrupted or harmful marketing is another story, and one that's not protected by the law. Families of the victims are proud that light was shed on the corruption within the advertising for gun-making companies like Remington.
Analysis: I'm happy about the conclusion the court drew to, it's nice to see a result like this considering our current political climate. Gun-making companies like Remington have always been able to get away with continuing to sell assault rifles after tragic events like Sandy Hook and the Parkland high school shooting in 2018. It gives me hope that gun control still remains a possibility in the U.S. Before I read this article, I didn't know anything about the cases that were still fighting after 7 years since the shooting. This article was written by the writing staff at BBC (the names weren't listed), and this article was written as a way to keep the international community informed about the current attitude toward gun laws in America, especially considering the recent New Zealand shooting on March 14th. This can be related to the Virginia Tech case, in which Virginia Tech was laid off of charges of negligence.
Emma Burkey: I agree that this does give me a small bit of hope for the future of gun laws, however this is again a small step in the overall war for them. This is a tremendous win for the families that are long overdue for the justice that they deserve.
ReplyDeleteI agree as well that this gives alot of faith for gun control and how it can still be a possibility. I am happy that the family can take a step to get what they deserve and want.
