Shayne Grant: Tulsa teachers march for 7 days

After marching across Oklahoma, Tulsa teachers arrived at the state Capitol to confront lawmakers. They came with blisters on their feet and in extreme pain. However they kept up hope for change. The march was for better teacher's compensation along with adequate funding for schools and proper supplies for students. Many communities have reached out and provided basic needs for the teachers as they mark. Craig Hoxie of Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa stated that the teachers have reached a breaking point saying, "teachers should not have to ask for Walmart gift cards."

It is great that these teachers have decided to march. They have given up time and pay to correct a wrong. Not only are they fighting to receive a livable wage, they are also fighting for their students and helping them get the proper tools needed for success. After all of this many lawmakers still have not budged however hopefully this will change in the future. This story is similar to the Freedom Riders of the 1950s and 60s with those men and women marching across the country for the equal rights of African Americans.

  1. It's interesting to see adult protesters after the recent resurgence in teenage protest following Parkland. It just goes to show that any age group can work to bring about change in government; I just wonder which will see more success.

  2. I think that it is great that teachers are taking a stand. Hopefully lawmakers will take this seriously and fund the school. by Victoria Valdez
