Shayne Grant: African-American Parkland Students want to be heard

Many African-American students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS have come forward saying that they feel as though their voices have not been heard during the recent campaigns. They reassure listeners that they fully support the students who have been at the forefront of the March for our Lives movement but state that the topic has  been circulating in the Black Lives Matter movement for years. One student stated that this message has been around since the police shooting of Trayvon Martin in 2012 but has not received the same type of support. The students just hope that their voices will begin to be heard.

I feel that it is great that the students are speaking out. It takes a lot of bravery to speak up to a group that is already speaking up to the social norms. It is good that they are not attempting to disavow the March for our Lives movement but only to build upon it. I hope that their voices begin to be heard. It is similar to when abolitionist women of the late 1800s felt discriminated against after the passage of the 15th Amendment allowing all men to vote but still not women.
