One of the Republican party's most powerful assets Paul Ryan announced today that he would not be running for re-election due to his desire to be closer to his family and the stress of his position. Mr. Ryan says that friction between him and the President of the US caused him a portion of this distress and he is quoted saying that Donald Trump and himself are "very different people" despite having "the same agenda." Trump later praised Ryan over Twitter saying he was "truly a good man." A Democratic majority seems likely next term, with many Republicans already retiring and more to follow Ryan in the near future.
Paul Ryan's resignation poses a significant threat to Republicans, as they are losing one of their most prominent lawmakers, and the important position may fall to a Democrat, which would hurt Republicans tremendously. The resignation of Mr. Ryan is similar to, but not quite the same, as the resignation of Nixon. Although the circumstances of their resignations are very different, they are both Republicans in very influential positions.
