He actively campaigns for the ability to discriminate against the LGBT community, while publicly avoiding such accusations of discrimination. Also, he supports groups which campaign and idolize gay conversion therapy.
You can connect this to US history by stating that the growth of conservatism post civil rights era helped fuel his political power, with the evangelical Christians becoming the backbone of the new republican party and the desire for the traditional nuclear family to become the model of American society and morality, which connects to the groups he supports with their desire to purify American society.
Mike Pence is literally the poster child for traditional nuclear family, its insane how closed minded our government can be.
