When Marjory Stoneman Douglas students returned from Spring Break today, a new safety measure was instituted: clear backpacks. All students of the school are now required to use them to carry their books, school supplies, and other belongings. The new bags received various reviews: some say that they're an invasion of privacy, some are alright with them as long as they are accompanied by metal detectors, some think that they're useless, and a group of students have even put price tags on their bags, protesting politicians who accept money from the NRA. Various people believe that this new safety measure will compromise a productive and creative school environment.
This article was written by Dianne Gallagher, Emanuella Grinberg, and Paul P. Murphy at CNN and updated earlier this evening. It aims to communicate the views and perspectives of these students on how the government is handling the issue of school safety. Since it's such a recent event, it's likely that the opinions of this article will grow and develop over time. Personally, I agree with the majority of these kids in saying that the bags violate privacy and wouldn't have stopped the shooter in the first place, since he was not a student. Some kids think that the government is trying to pacify them with the bags instead of passing actual gun control laws, and I don't doubt that's true. These students are smarter than that and I have faith they will not let themselves be sated or calmed by politicians who are still trying to push their personal agendas after the countless tragedies that have occurred.
Synthesis: This article can be related back to Bill Clinton's "don't ask, don't tell" policy instituted during his administration. While he originally advocated the ban on gays in the military, he had to compromise that moral and settle for "don't ask, don't tell" to keep his Republican votes. In both cases, politicians used tactics to attempt to sate the people in order to retain their own votes and power.
I think it is crazy that they have to have clear backpacks. It doesn't really do anything or make sense.

ReplyDeleteI don't really understand the effectiveness of this solution. Frankly this doesn't seem like it will accomplish that much. I think there are bigger problems that can't just be solved by clear backpacks.
