When Donald Trump dismissed FBI director James Comey in 2017, he claimed that his decision had to do with Comey's "mishandling" of the invesitgation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server during her time as Secretary of State. However Comey later revealed that he believed his firing had been for his role into Russian interference in the last election. In Comey's memoir, he discusses the challenges that he faced working with the Trump presidency. He describes a moment when Trump asked him for a pledge of loyalty at a private dinner in January of last year. A key component of the FBI's investigational credibility is the distant that it keeps from the executive branch. If Comey were to pledge loyalty to someone he might (and later did) have to investigate, it would compromise his role as director. He also addresses the president's prefered means of communication--Twitter. He says that because we have become so used to Trump tweeting out made up information and empty threats almost daily, it will ultimately change our view of the role of the president as well. He calls Americans to act and realize that this presidency "threatens something very fundamental that is above partisanship."
This is not the first time a president has split and upset the US public. Nixon did it with Watergate. Hoover's ineffective leadership in the Depression caused an uproar. Buchanan split Americans in half when he refused to either prevent the spread of slavery or challenge the states that became the Confederacy before the Civil War. Trump's "dedication" to the silent majority and refusal to follow the ways of the old Republican party established in the Reagan era has caused a rift not only in his party, but in his people. Even lifelong Republicans are switching sides. Additionally, Comey's warnings are nothing new. Muckrakers and student-led movements in the 60's protested their leaders and have ultimately ended up on the right side of history, on the side of justice. The common theme of this presidency seems to be "learn from your past mistakes, or else repeat them with the same drastic consequences." We have still not entirely realized this. It's time to wake up.
