This Mysterious Marijuana Syndrome is Relieved by Hot Showers
There is a
mysterious marijuana condition called cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome that
gives the person severe nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. The solutions to the symptoms are hot showers,
oddly enough. One-third of heavy
marijuana users have symptoms of cannabinoid hyperemesis, an estimated 2.7
million Americans. Doctors don’t know
why this happens or why hot showers can solve it, but they do know that
long-term drug use can result in changes in the brain and nervous system, and
that compounds in the body are similar to compounds found in marijuana. The idea that doctors have right now is that
the tetrahydrocannibinol that the body is producing changes the body’s pain
system, and that the hot water distracts the body from the pain, but it is a
hypothesis so we don’t really know. This
is becoming a pretty serious condition, not resulting in death, but having to
go to the ER a few times a week and having to stay home and shower all the
time. The only real cure for this is to
stop.
The article
was written by Rachel Rettner on April 9, 2018 for CBS News. The article was written mainly for marijuana
users, but it can also be helpful for everyone.
The article is important because I hear lots of people saying that
marijuana doesn’t do anything and you will be completely fine, but there are
clearly a couple million Americans suffering from cannabinoid hyperemesis,
showing that there are affects to the drug.
This can be compared to the prohibition movement because lots of people
didn’t think that there was anything wrong with alcohol, and it took women and
children being beaten for people to take notice of the problem. People who are sick need to be recognized so
that others don’t have to suffer in the same way.
