A family was charged $15,000 over six weeks for crossing a bridge that should be free. The inhabitants of Rockway, Queens are supposed to be able to go across the Cross Bay Bridge free of charge, but a new, cashless toll system has messed up everything. When drivers' accounts are too low, the system increases the toll and fines them 100 dollars. It is harder for the drivers to know when their balance is low than it used to be. This bridge is also the only way that residents of Rockway can reach the rest of New York.
This reminds me of the whole "taxation without representation" protests of colonists in the 1750s and 1760s. The colonists were being taxed by british parliament, and did not approve of the situation they were. The New York family has been fined lots of money for something they feel they should not be fined for.

I really hope that something is done soon because $15,000 over six weeks is crazy, people shouldn't be charged for just trying to go about their day.
ReplyDeleteI love the connection that you made. I feel that it was very relevant to this current event.
ReplyDeleteThis is crazy and I completely see how you would relate this to the "No Taxation without Representation" movement.
ReplyDeleteThis is completely unfair, what a great connection to the revolution!
