A new law passed in New York prohibits convicted domestic abusers from owning or buying firearms. This new law amends a previous law passed after the Sandy Hook shooting, that had only prevented abusers from owning revolvers and pistols. This most recent law states that all those convicted of abuse must turn over ALL firearms.
You'd think that this law would have passed out of common sense a while ago; however, I can see how this law might be harder to pass then one might think. By passing this law you take away a human beings constitutional right to bare arms and protect oneself. And even if someone is a convicted of a crime are they not still a human being? Personally I believe that the moment you hit someone you're supposed to love, whether it be your partner or child, you loose any and all rights that allows you the ability to protect yourself. You don't deserve the rights that you would take away from your family or friends.

It seems like on the surface that this should have been passed a long time ago however it is easy to see why many would fight it. However if you are a known abuser, you should not have access to tools to make abuse easier.
ReplyDeleteUm, that law was centered on preventing DOMESTIC ABUSERS from obtaining a firearm, not every single human. What would these abusers protect themselves from if they are the predator in the first place?

ReplyDeleteAlthough the law is late its better late than never.I think its good to prevent domestic abusers from purchasing firearms but i also feel like people who dont have a bad record should be limited on the amount of firearms they should be able to purchase
