Aeva Ramirez- New York makes it illegal for police to have sex with people in their custody

New York law makers have passed a law that bans police officers from having sex with someone in their custody. Cops were previously allowed to have consensual sex with detainees or suspects. Even with the obvious power inequality situations like these were not immediately deemed as sexual assault. This has allowed for a legal loophole in matters in which an officer has been accused of assault. Many local and state leaders are happy to finally have passed this new law.

I didn't know or think that we'd have to pass a law to enforce the fact that sleeping with someone in your custody is just a bad idea in general. The thought never even crossed my mind that this would be a problem. Shame on an officer who would sleep with a suspect while in their custody. You are not performing your societal duties and if it is against a person's will than shame on you for violating the very civil rights you have sworn to protect. Now I know that these times are rather controversial so I want to state to anyone who may read this that we can't judge all officers for the injustices that another may commit. People are quick to put everyone in the same boat and that gets us nowhere.

  1. This article is very stunning. Just ash you said I never imagined this would be an issue in our world but i guess so. Even though they have claimed this to be consensual, the power difference in this is just too large.
