5 Weeks After | Mica Stout

Students of Marjory Stoneman Douglass High School return to a school full of strict rules, and safety precautions. After leading one of the largest youth protests about gun laws, these students are coming back to a "prison", and they feel like it will never be normal anymore. Although the #NeverAgain movement brought unity throughout the school and community, many of the goals they had were not met. Now, they go to a school that requires only clear backpacks, and identification for everyone in the school. Also, more security and police are present around the area to ensure protection. Since Nikolas Cruz wasn't even a student of the school at the hour of the shooting, the students feel like the safety measures they are taking now aren't helping anything.
In Brown v. Board of Education, the students were advocating for no more segregation within the school, and public schools everywhere. They were angry about the unjust treatment of "separate but equal", because it wasn't at all fair. Just like the students at Marjory Stoneman Douglass, they are trying to get all the unnecessary things out of the way. Yes, it is safety that's the issue, and what's going on won't do anyone any extra harm, but clear backpacks is invading their privacy, and the school should feel safe without the extra police and rules.

  1. I also don't see how that much security is going to help. If parents put that much effort into protesting and reforming gun laws, the shooting would have never happened.
