Lois Riess, 56, a grandmother from Minnesota, incited a nation wide manhunt that shocked many people. In March, she killed her husband in their home, and then fled to Florida. In-between April 5th and 9th, Riess killed Pamela Hutchinson and then proceeded to steal her identity. Hutchinson has a striking resemblance to Riess, and could be called her doppelgänger. After killing her look-alike, Riess stole her credit cards and drivers license so that she could continue on the run. Armed with $5,000 of Hutchinson's money, her white Acura, and no suspicion, she resurfaced in Texas this past week. One of the ways the police tracked her was through her gambling transactions at various casinos across the country. Without these financial clues, it would have been exponentially harder to catch her. Finally, with a tip from Niikie Soto, the police were able to capture Riess in South Padre Island, Texas on Thursday. She is now in custody.
This caught my attention because it is such an unusual story. Generally these type of complicated crimes are only seen in movies and TV shows, but it is extremely crazy that this woman lasted so long on the run. I think this can be connected to the organized crime of the 1920s because this methodical killing is exactly the type of crimes that occurred back then. The fact that Riess found her doppelgänger is almost comical, but it is so sad that her life ended in such a horrible way. I am glad they caught her.

I think stories like this one are so interesting! I wonder how she was able to track down her doppleganger so easily.
ReplyDeleteme too this was interesting
DeleteOlivia Wall- That is so crazy, how was she not arrested at all? And to have a look a like and be able to pull it off for a while is nuts.
