Voting systems are old // Trevor Turnbow

Voting security

This article talks of the different outdated machines being used in various states by voters in the 2018 election. Statistics show that 41 states have voting machines over a decade old. This makes them a liability, vulnerable to hackings and they possess an inability to repair as most of the parts are so outdated they're no longer being manufactured. Their is necessary change that needs to be made, however during an election year is not going to be the best time so voters shouldn't expect much change this year. This outdated software poses a threat to U.S democracy, a list was released of countries that are significant cybersecurity threats. Russia, China, North Korea,  and Iran, which is pretty freaky.
The idea of the democracy our country was founded on being interrupted is a jarring idea, but it's not like it hasn't already been compromised. There have been many times in history in which American Democracy wasn't truly the peoples choice except instead of hacking forces from outside it was internal. Jim Crow laws put in place (i.e literacy tests, poll taxes, etc.) were put in place to prevent african americans from excersizing their constitutional right to vote. Women weren't even granted the right until 19 amendments into the constitution. Updating the voting machines is important to protect us from tampering within elections, but honestly how pure is American Democracy anyway.
