Lt-Col Arnaud Beltrame, age 44, was a police officer in France who helped put a stop to an radical Islamist gunman holding hostages. The gunman, Redouane Lakdim, stole a car killing a passenger along with shooting at policeman before he would enter a supermarket to shoot more and take hostages. After the gunman took a hostage, Beltrame offered to swap places with the hostage. This would put an end to the gunman killing both in the process. There was no evidence that the gunman would act before the attack although he was on a watchlist.
This connects to many hostage crisis and terrorist attacks which have occurred throughout US history. For example, the Iranian hostage crisis where the US embassy was taken over and hostages were held for 444 days.
