On Sunday night, the first autonomous car accident fatality occurred in Arizona. Uber driver Rafael Vasquez was behind the wheel of a self driving Volvo XC90 when it collided with pedestrian Elaine Herzberg while she was walking her bicycle across the street of a cross walk.
After this revelation occurred, Uber has discontinued their autonomous vehicles for the safety of passengers, drivers, and pedestrians. Personally, I think self driving cars are a thing of the future that we are not ready for or necessarily need at this time, and it is tragic that a woman was killed in an accident because a company was attempting to be futuristic and show off their new technology.
Self driving cars are cool, but pointless to me. There still needs to be someone behind the wheel(who gets paid for sitting in a seat), and learning to drive should be a necessary life skill; because it teaches responsibility.
ReplyDeleteTechnology continues to advance not many positive ways, but it should certainly be put on pause when it causes tragic events like this one.
