Linda Brown, who as a schoolgirl was at the center of the landmark US Supreme Court case that rejected racial segregation in American schools, died in Topeka, Kansas, Sunday Afternoon. The newspaper says Brown was 75, but some sources have said she was 76. The 1954 Supreme Court Case, Brown v Board of Education was a monumental case in United States history, and involved several families, all trying to dismantle decades of federal education laws that condoned segregated schools for black and white students.
This is very heartbreaking to hear considering we are learning about the Civil Rights movement right now, and how the Brown v Board of Education court case was the event that triggered the Civil Rights movement. Without it, there might not have even been a movement, or it wouldn't have come until later on in history. The Brown v Board of Education case overturned the previous case of Plessy v Ferguson, the insulting "separate but equal" decision. This case also led to the allowance of the Little Rock Nine to go to the Arkansas school Little Rock Central. It also led to protests such as the Montgomery bus boycott. Overall, this court case heavily impacted United States history and will always be one of the most important symbols of the Civil Rights movement.
