After students across the country participated in the march for our lives protests, GOP Senator Rick Santorum made a very critical comment. He said that rather than fighting for gun control laws, students should focus on their individual safety and prepare for active school shootings. Despite the rebuttals of a few, Santorum stood strongly by his word.
Although I disagree with his opinion, I understand that everyone is entitled to their own. People like W.E.B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington used tactics that required other forces to assist the problem. Booker T. Washington wanted to concentrate on economic goals rather than political ones to stop discrimination against African Americans and W.E.B. DuBois supported a strong education to help African Americans achieve equality. Rick Santorum believes that the best way to ensure safety is to actually prepare for the possibility of that situation occurring. Not everyone thinks that dealing head on with the issue is the way to go and not everyone thinks that playing around the issue is the way to go.
I however disagree with Santorum, not just because of the words he said but because of what he meant when he said them. By making such a statement, he told young American students that it is their job to protect themselves, not the country’s. Our country is supposed to ensure the satisfaction and safety of its citizens so to tune out the loud voice that is screaming for help is just wrong. As proven through all those who marched this weekend, people want their children in a protected learning environment and students want to be protected. We can’t keep grazing over the tragedy each time it happens, at some point effort needs to be put forward. It is people like Rick Santorum that are preventing the comfort of many. https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/25/politics/rick-santorum-guns-cnntv/index.html
