Babies with Down Syndrome are Taking Center Stage in the US Abortion Fight
A state representative from Utah just proposed a bill to make it a crime for women to get an abortion just because their baby seems to have Down syndrome. Laws like this have been passed in a few states, making it a very controversial part of the already controversial abortion discussion. Critics of the bill say that it is unconstitutional, its restricting abortion and not protecting babies with Down syndrome. The bill doesn’t say anything about programs for the people with Down syndrome after they are born. So far, groups such as American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood have been able to block the bills. Many think it is unfair to make families have a child with Down syndrome if they are not prepared for it. Down syndrome advocacy groups have stayed out of the debate, there are many parents who have children with Down syndrome who agree with abortion and others who don’t. Now there are tests that can determine if the fetus has any disorders, which are recommended for older women who get pregnant; it isn’t as common in the US but it is very common around the world, especially in Europe. Denmark and Iceland are on the way to eradicating Down syndrome, which can only be done through killing all the people with Down syndrome. People with Down syndrome used to be shut out of society by being abandoned or killed, but now they have productive lives were they can go to college and get married, and live until around 60. Down syndrome is funded very poorly, and with all of the people in the country with it, there needs to be more found about it.
The article was written by Ariana Eunjung Cha on March 5 for the Washington Post. The article was written for families who are getting pregnant and have a chance that the baby could have Down syndrome, older women who get pregnant, and people passionate about the abortion debate. The article is important because it shows that people are ok with killing their baby just because the baby has Down syndrome. This can be compared to discrimination in the workplace and school because of race and gender. These are things that people are born into, you don’t choose to be male or female, you don’t choose to be white or black, you don’t choose to have two or three chromosomes in 21. Babies are being discriminated against just because they could have Down syndrome. It’s not anyone’s fault as to what happens when children are born, especially not the baby’s, and killing your unborn child just because they COULD have Down syndrome.
Honestly I find this so sad, it's not the babies fault that they have Down syndrome, and they definitely shouldn't be punished for that.
ReplyDeleteI'm not particularly against abortion, because I believe that a women can do whatever she wants with her body, but I don't like the idea of aborting a child because of a disease they have.
