At a Thursday event on gun violence in Atlanta, young students of color spoke out about how often the issue affects their communities ― and how little the country pays attention.
“Parkland, it was a tragedy,” 18-year-old Shatony Rivers, a senior at Turner Tech High School in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood, said at the Urban Gun Violence Town Hall. “But we have the same situation going on in our hood every day. And we don’t get the same response from media, officials or government.”
-- My hot take
Yes! Preach! Like I said before, it's cool that people are finally paying attention to gun violence, but why now? Because white students are the ones talking about it. Black people have been saying these same things since the 60's, so why does America care more now? White people only see things as a problem when it's white people getting shot. The case of Stephon Clark, however, is getting no attention. Why? Because it was an act of gun violence towards a black person by two white people (they are indeed on paid leave btw) Hmmmm.
