Link to Article:Debunking the biggest myths about MLK - CNN.com\
Summary: This article written by John Blake is about the 5 most common myths about MLK. This article highlights the fact that MLK was always a radical thinker, he was not a republican, he didn't oppose affirmative action, he (at times) demonstrated sexist behavior, and was not always a serious solemn guy. IT offers the point of view that while to many he was an illustrious man, but he in actuality he was a regular guy in many ways.
Analysis: This article is one of many "reclaim MLK's legacy" posts I've seen as the weekend began. Just like any other famous political figures in US history there are often untrue perspectives and myths that befall upon their legacy. For example, Abraham Lincoln is known for the setting free of the slaves, when in reality, he owned slaves, and issued the proclamation in the confederate territories, who mostly did not obey Lincoln. Its also interesting how conservatives refer to one of his well known quotes about being judged by the color of your skin to say that King would've disliked affirmative action, something that isn't entirely true. I specifically pointed out this myth about King and Affirmative action because it is a widely debated on issue even today, and a few weeks ago there was a case about how affirmative action students were supposedly "taking" a white young adults' spot at the university of Texas in 2015. Despite the myths and what not, it's always a great day to honor the achievements of King towards racial equality.
It's very interesting that there are so many myths about someone so important. I guess when news gets around, it gets warped and changed. It remind me of when people kept on saying that Darwin said "Survival of the fittest" when he never really said that.
