The U.S. government has introduced new initiatives to counter the recruitment of Americans to extremists groups such as IS. Meetings have been set up with representatives of notable technology companies such as, Google, Apple and Facebook to discuss ways in which tech can battle terrorists and the encouragement of violence online. A new Global Engagement Center was introduced by the State Department, which will allow foreign audiences to curb these messages. The meeting'd agenda included a meeting that discussed how to "help others create, publish and amplify alternative content that would undercut the" the so-called Islamic State." IS has recruited members across the U.S. and Europe. Technology groups have said they wish to help without invading users' privacy.
The purpose of this article is to inform the public of a new method the U.S. government is taking to limit the influence of extremists groups outside of their own countries. Their intent is to show citizens in America and Europe, as well as in other countries, that they are fighting those who wish to do harm to others. This reminds me of the history of censorship, especially in the early United States when the concept of freedom of speech arose. when the printing press was created newspapers that had the courage to print anything would print anything. Some of the stuff that was printed spoke out against or encouraged people to join those who spoke out against slavery, politicians, the wealthy people, etc.

I think this initiative is extremely smart and useful because a lot of the recruitment going on is happening through technology.
ReplyDeleteCrazy how technology nowadays makes issues like these more helpful to tackle
ReplyDeleteI think this has a chance of working and could possibly help the world avoid some unnecessary trouble.
