Danville Police Department received a call just minutes before Officer Cottrell was killed. The call came from a woman who told them that her ex-boyfriend told her he was going to kill an officer. The police station tried to warn Cottrell but it was too late. Police arrested Herschel Jones III after a short police chase. Police tried to figure out if Jones' intention was to kill Cottrell or if it was to kill any police officer. They are still investigating the case. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund said that within 11 months, at least 30 U.S. law enforcement officers were shot to death. The article goes on to tell a story of another story of two officers in Utah who were shot at, one harmed and the other killed.
Police security has turned into a huge problem these days. They are the ones keeping us safe, but who is keeping them safe? In my opinion, there needs to be more protection for police officers whether it be carrying more weapons or wearing more bullet proof apparel. They are just trying to do their jobs, not harm anyone.
