Today, almost all of the public schools in Detroit were closed due to lack of teachers. These teachers all banded together, and decided to take a "sick" day, because they were tired of putting up with old buildings, that were falling apart. It has been a year since the idea of restructuring the Detroit school system had come up, but officials have not yet reached a conclusion, and teachers are upset.
In my opinion, this anger coming from the teachers is completely reasonable- why should they and their students have to put up with old facilities that are no longer up to the standards that a school building should be held to? The United States spends billions of dollars to improve the military, and protect America from outside forces, but nobody thinks about protecting the children- the future. Why do we choose to invest in expensive and unnecessary weapons, and send children to school in old buildings that could potentially become safety hazards? Of course it is important to protect the country from outside forces, but it's equally as important to protect those who will be leading us in a few years.

The next powerball winning should go to America's worst schools. Even Carnegie knew he couldn't hoard all that money.
