In Final State of Union, Obama Aims to Define his Presidency by Caroline North 9th period

President Obama plans to give his final State of the Union speech Tuesday.  This State of the Union is said to be unlike the other 6 he's given and deviate from the traditional program of listing grand proposals, new policies, and presidential appeals.  Instead, he will address where he believes the nation is currently, and the direction he would like to head.  Many reporters are referring to Obama as holding a lame-duck status: where an elected official is approaching the end of his or her term.  Despite only a few months left in office, the president hopes to make each and everyday count by tightening gun control regulations, closing Guantanamo Bay Prison, gaining approval on his Asia-Pacific trade agreement, and improving foreign policy.

This debates what actions President Obama will take in his final days as president.  It is evident that the president has had a difficult time arriving upon an agreement on several issues with Congress over the last eight years, and it will be interesting to observe how effective Congress and Obama will be in cooperating with each other these final months.
