On Monday, gunmen set off a car bomb before entering the Baghdad Mall, killing at least 18 people and wounding about 50 in the city's predominantly Shiite east. ISIS is claiming responsibility for the attack, saying that four ISIS followers carried it out but Iraqi officials say the attack was carried out by seven men, not four. The standoff ended with two of the attackers dead and four arrested. The car bomb in southeast Baghdad which was detonated in a crowded market area killed five and wounded 12.
This reminds me of the Paris terror attacks which happened late last year which ISIS also claimed to be behind. One of the things that makes me skeptical about their claim specifically this time is that they claimed the wrong number of attackers. There's always that possibility that they could be taking advantage of the horrible deeds that others are doing and claiming them as theirs in an attempt to make themselves look more dangerous and capable. Whether or not ISIS is truly behind these attacks doesn't stop the fact that innocent people lost their lives and that this was an act of terrorism. I'm not really sure why the number don't add up from the officials (2 dead, 4 captured but they said 7 were behind the attack), but I hope justice is served for those who died unjustly and that we figure out a way to subdue ISIS and deal with terrorism.
