Vice Admiral Jan E. Tighe was made head of the U.S. Fleet Cyber Command along with the U.S. 10th Fleet, which makes her "the first female commander of a numbered fleet in U.S. Navy history," according to that military branch. She is succeeding Admiral Micheal S. Rogers (who is becoming the head of the National Security Agency and head of U.S. Cyber Command). She is the fleet's third commander ever, and was previously its deputy commander. She was born in Kentucky and grew up in Plantation, Florida. She graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and earned advanced degrees in electrical engineering and applied mathematics from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. She has worked on many different assignments in the Navy, including being an airborne special evaluator in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Shield and Storm in the 90's. Recently, the Navy along with other military branches have been criticized for not doing enough to prevent sexual assault. Sexual assault has been on the rise, and some top officers have actually condoned these acts.
I think it is very important that women are making achievements like this. When you think about the fact that women were previously prevented from joining the navy less than one hundred years ago, then it's pretty impressive. Who knows, maybe it won't be long before we see the first woman president of the United States. Seeing women get respect makes me hopeful that there will be fewer sexual assaults, but there will need to be some major changes made in the way our society handles that kind of incident.
