Nia Edwards 4th period Dying Mom Sees Daughter Graduate

Nia Edwards
4th period

April 2th 2014, senior, Evie Shumaker, graduates early so that her mother who has stage 4 pancreatic cancer, could see it happen. Although Evie wasn't scheduled to graduate later this spring, she already had all of her credits need and met all of her requirements. The staff at Newark Digital Academy, "were so impressed with with Evie's commitment to academics and knew of her mother's years-long struggle" that they decided to arrange a special event right in front of Melissa Shumaker's hospital bed. It was a small ceremony with just Evie, her mother and father, the school's economics teacher and graduation coach.

This is really awesome. The fact that the school cared enough to allow this mother to have the chance to see her daughter graduate from high school is really amazing. I'm glad that they were able to make this happen and make this family very happy in doing so. We never really hear stories like this often so it's nice to see that people have good hearts to want to help a family out.

  1. This is such a sad situation but its amazing that they would do something so special for this mom. I agree that it is good to see the teacher's desire and care to make this happen.
