A Not So Happy Easter Surprise- McKenzie Hartmann, 4th Period

This article is essentially about an unfortunate and hateful easter eggs left on the lawns of a Virginian community.  Inside the eggs were heinous, racist messages intended to intimidate and shame the recipients.  One man opened one excitedly, assuming it was a gift from a neighbor, only to find a note that said "immigration=white genocide."  Upon reading this, he promptly began gathering all the similar eggs in the hopes of sparing his neighbors and children from being exposed to this kind of unnecessary callousness on what is supposed to be a happy day.  Additionally, some eggs held links to websites that advertised controversial information that essentially links any form of non-white migration as genocide. Authorities are pursuing the issue and following up with groups presumed to be responsible, though the community had one message for the children affected by this.  That was that they had to option to spread hate or love, and they hoped the one good that could come out of this experience is that it will inspire them to spread the latter.

This is so terrible, it is as if a single action has set an entire community back countless years of strikes, acceptance and change.  It was so cruel of the perpetrators to wrap their messages in easter eggs, especially when on this particular day they are a symbol of innocence and meant for children.  I hope the police catch the people responsible and am glad they already have suspects.  Though it frightens me that such ignorance is still alive and well and that people would take such drastic measures to spread their hateful cause.

  1. The placing of these obliviously written messages in the easter eggs meant for innocent, youthful children shows perpetrators lack of awareness of when it is appropriate to voice their opinions. Also, the over-generalized, extreme nature of these statements (in addition to the fact that they were put in Easter Eggs) take credibility away from the writers of these declarations.
