Colorado woman shot dead while on phone with 911 for 13 minutes
The victim called 911 on Monday night, saying that her husband was "talking about the end of the world" and asking her to shoot him, according to a police probable cause affidavit. She told the dispatcher that there was a gun in the house, but that it was in a safe. The couple's three children were scared, the woman told the dispatcher, and Kirk was hallucinating, she said. She then began to scream after seeing that Kirk had grabbed the gun from the safe. What followed was "an apparent gunshot and the victim was not heard on the call again," according to the affidavit. The phone call was in its 13th minute, and police had not yet arrived when the shot was fired. Richard Kirk, 47, was arrested on suspicion of first degree murder.
This is scary because we trust the police a lot an you think that if you call 911 you will be safe. Also, 13 minutes is a fairly long time and police still hadn't arrived. It is very sad that this happened but it should be used as a lesson for 911 operators and responding police officers because every second matters.
We are supposed to turn to the police with problems and not have to worry about them casting judgements or telling us that we are wrong. Yes, there are some loony people out there, but they should respond with the notion that there is someone in trouble that needs help.
