Veronica Jones: NASA discovers Earth-sized planet that may sustain life
Aliens are something that have always found their way into the media, wether it be the scientific end of the spectrum or the paranoid conspiracy end. Either way, a life supporting planet similar to earth has long been a scientist's dream. And as of Friday, it has possibly come true. Scientist have discovered a planet, Kepler-186f, about 10% larger than earth and within the habitable zone. The Habitable Zone is the area around every star that is just right for sustaining life. Up until now, about 20 or so planets have been found to be in the habitable zone, but none similar to earth. It's exciting news for sure, and yet, there are still a few problems. The star the planet circles."The star's size -- it's an M-dwarf star, smaller and less hot than our sun -- also could come into play. Because it is smaller, the habitable zone is closer, so radiation could prevent life if the atmosphere isn't dense enough," and "scientists right now don't have the technology to know what the atmosphere is."
So, while this new planet may not be the alien inhabited planet that people imagine it to be, it's still an interesting discovery and hopefully more information will come out about it soon.
