This was a pretty neato article and I don't think that about most articles. So, there's this new bill that's going to see if people applying for welfare are on drugs. First, the person has to answer a questionnaire and if their responses indicate drug use they have to take the pee in a cup test. If they refuse the test, they don't get paid. If they take the test and it's positive, they must be treated before they get paid. The reasoning behind this is that it will help families in need to create positive changes and get them to better provide for themselves and for their children. The problem with this bill is that it's suggesting that only poor people are affected by drugs when the fact of the matter is that literally anyone could have a drug problem nowadays. The author of this article suggests that Americans tend to demonize the lower class and use them as scapegoats for our problems, and I can definitely see why he thinks so. I think this bill is super unfair since it's singling out the lower class like this.

I don't think that it necessarily singles out the poor on purpose. It singles out those who use welfare (who are indeed poor) but I think they aim to make those people function better by convincing them to not take drugs. Plus, drugs are supposed to be pretty expensive, so they would save a lot of money by not having to pay for the thing they are addicted to.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the rich could undergo drug tests in order to qualify for tax cuts?
