A South Korean ferry sank the other day. Officials aboard the boat told the passengers (mainly students) to sit still, and that it would be more dangerous if they got up to get life vests. Nearly 300 people were unaccounted for because they took instruction. As soon as survivors reached shore, they started telling terrifying stories of their final moments on the ferry. Apparently, children were told to keep still, even though only a few of those who disobeyed survived.
As many as 179 people were found in the icy water later that day. I think the fact that this takes place in South Korea makes people feel differently than if it had taken place in America. For example, people in America would not have taken the same attitude as the civilized Koreans did. Not saying that Americans aren't civilized, but if a bus was going underwater and the driver said to remain still,10/10 people would jump out of their seats to save themselves.
