Bernie Sanders views are often classified as "socialist", a term which has acquired a heavily negative connotation during the first red scare after WWI and the Bolshevik rebellion, as well as the Palmer raids. As the 20s wore on and the Great Depression began, socialist values became the enemy.

This weekend, Senator Bernie Sanders, who ran in the 2016 election and lost to Hilary Clinton, announced that he was going to run again in 2020, and this time, he is confident he would win. His goals for the presidency were clear and had not differed much from his 2016 campaign. He vowed to take on big pharma, increase social security benefits, free public healthcare and education. In addition, he mentioned that "real change never comes from the top down, it comes from the bottom up".
