CEO of Southwest Key Programs Steps Down | Daniella Castanheira

The founder and CEO of Southwest Key Programs, Juan Sánchez, is stepping down. Southwest Key Programs is a nonprofit charity that houses immigrant children in 26 shelters nationwide. As more and more migrant children are separated from their parents, Southwest Key has been put under the spotlight, and not everything adds up. Sánchez himself made $1.5 million in compensation in 2016, which is nearly double the salary he made the previous year, and twice what the chief executive at the American Red Cross made. Southwest Key itself has come under fire for scandals like sexual harassment and sexual abuse, licensure problems with rented buildings, as well as turning in background checks late. The Justice Department did say that they are conducting an investigation over the possible misuse of federal money, but no one associated with Southwest Key has confirmed or denied this.

This article was written by Emanuella Grinberg and was updated on March 11, 2019, making it a very recent source. Personally, I knew nothing about Sánchez stepping down, or the suspicion surrounding Southwest Key. While I did know about the Trump administration's zero-tolerance border policy leading to the separation of migrant children from the parents, I had not considered the effects of it and how many children would need places to stay. As there have been no formal or concrete answers about the possible money-related allegations, I can't say for sure whether I support Sánchez's decision to step down or not. Hopefully this serves as a lesson that these facilities, and most importantly the children, need proper care.
