The Modern South -Alex Travell

ANALYSIS:
Throughout history, the south has constantly been a tie to racism. Here, history is heavy, immediate, and most importantly, it's everywhere. Unfortunately, the history that is most on display here is related in some way to slavery. The streets here are named after Confederate generals. There's a star at the Alabama State Capital on the spot where Jefferson Davis became President of the Confederate States. Plus, not even a block away, a young Martin Luther King Jr. and other activists planned the 1955-56 Montgomery Bus Boycott from his basement office at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. Before this, throughout the history of America, slaves were sold on the same streets. Many statues and memorials convey the gruesome aftermath of slavery, yet not too many people have noticed.
All my life, I have seen statues of people I didn't recognize. Only until a few years ago did I realize the location in which I called home.... the former Confederate States. Sure, we don't associate ourselves with that name anymore, but it's hard forgetting the fact that the ground I walk on everyday was once poisoned with the idea of slavery.
