Mansfield, ISD has been abuzz lately with interviews, court visits and publicity due to their current events involving one particular teacher. Art teacher Stacy Bailey has worked with children of all ages and has loved sharing her passion for art with others. However, things changed when Bailey reached towards other local schools to investigate their LGBT stance and see if they had included it in their anti-discrimination rules for both students and staff. After talking with other teachers from local schools Bailey received an email from the principle at Charlotte Anderson Elementary School, her own school in which she works, and was informed she would take a leave from the school with pay. The school instructed her to avoid contacting students, parents, staff members and to not go to the school or use her email, office or work space while "an investigation was taking place." However, there was no said reason as to why this has begun. In response to this, teachers, parents, and students have pleaded to MISD to include the LGBTQ community into the anti-discrimination act to ensure no more hatred, violence or discrimination in the workplace towards the LGBTQ community. The verdict remains undecided but this is no different than the Monkey Trial in the early 1900s in which a teacher was sued and fined for simply explaining evolution considering it was "attacking morals" and "religious freedom". This entire circus is ridiculous, the real world shows all orientations and races and beliefs, one should not be banned from a school without valid reason just because you don't agree with their lifestyle or who they are.

I think it's important for people to realize how prevalent homophobia still is. Someone can get fired for supporting anti-discrimination rules, and queer people still often face hatred.
ReplyDeleteIt is sad that she was asked to do this after only requesting to have the language implemented into the school policies. Hopefully Mansfield will rethink its decisions.

ReplyDeletethis teacher should not be punished for her sexual orientation. Teachers are teachers no matter what sex, race, or what their sexual orientation is.
This is unfair and a strong example of homophobia.
