Lack of Smoke Alarms - Lauren Rothert

On Saturday, an apartment in Trump Tower caught fire and quickly spread, becoming deadly. When the New York City Fire Department arrived, they stated that there was no alarm sounding in the unit when they arrived, meaning the floor of the fire did not contain a working smoke alarm. The fire on the 50th floor of New York City high-rise left one dead and six injured. Because of the lack of proper working smoke alarms, the FDNY was notified by a building-wide alarm system in Trump Tower.

This is very worrisome, especially because the upper-level residential floors are not equipped with fire sprinklers. So if this fire occurred a few floors higher the death toll would most likely have been much higher. I hope they use this tragedy as a reminder to always check the alarm systems, as they prove to be very important in avoiding things like this. I hope those injured recovery quickly.

  1. I agree that this tragedy should be used as a reminder to always check alarm systems, but why did they not have sprinklers installed in some rooms?
