Keith Ellison: Why teachers are fighting back//KLARK JOHNSON

Last month in 55 West Virginia counties, walked out of their jobs to protest poverty wages, unpaid overtime and poor working conditions. Thousands of Oklahoma teachers also walked out of their classrooms onto the state capitol. The average teacher salary in West Virginia in the 2016-17 year was less than it was for the 1999-2000 school year while the cost of goods teachers spend their salary on has risen.

As a result of Budget cuts, many school districts had to cut a full day of school. In 1968, thousands of garbage collectors walked off their jobs in Memphis for the same reasons. Since the sanitation worker's strikes, a lot has changed.
