In this week's episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver went over the American Immigration courts, which are unsurprisingly screwed up. With most of the defendants representing themselves due to it being civil court, not criminal court which gives each defendant a lawyer under the Supreme Court ruling Gideon v Wainwright in 1963, the defendants most likely lose their cases. Some of these defendants are actually children, literally 3 and 4 year olds who have their entire lives forced into their small, unstable hands.
Since immigration courts are actually part of the Executive Branch, lead by Jeff Sessions as the DOJ, conservative values and xenophobia run rampant. I most definitely think the Immigration Court needs to be better managed and put under the protection of Gideon v Wainwright, but change in the near future is most certainly improbable
Well, there needs to be a better way and we must find one in our lifetime. Pointing fingers at the other side doesn't help much. We need to figure out a way to help innocent children who have parents who are immigrants. By Victoria Valdez
